Chapter 3

Taqwa

God-Consciousness

Taqwa begins with repentance. Avoiding everything that may harm one's spiritual growth is integral to achieving taqwā. It entails eating less, talking less and sleeping less. It is foolish to engage in gossip and criticize others while forgetting one’s self-accountability.

A Sufi is present in the moment. The past is gone and the future is unknown. What remains in your hands is the present and it holds the key to your (good or bad) fate. Time brings work with it. If you postpone today’s work, when will you do tomorrow's tasks?

Do whatever you may

But do it today

What is Taqwa (God Consciousness)? It is the avoidance of everything that may harm you. Omitting obligations and committing forbidden actions are both sins. One should shun from both.

As humans, we have a lot of needs and desires. Relying on one’s efforts alone is a mistake. Trusting Allah (SWT) to fulfill your needs is essential. This is tawakkul (Reliance on Allah). Not striving to accomplish what you need, is not reliance. It is laziness not to use your physical abilities to fulfill your goals and a great waste of God’s blessings.
