Sūrat al-Ḥāqqa
سورۃ الحاقہ
Revealed in Makkah. 52 verses. 2 sections (rukūʿ).
Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
الْحَاقَّةُ
al-ḥāqqah.
"The Inevitable Reality." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:1)
Translation: "The coming event, the Resurrection, the Inevitable Reality, the matter that is bound to be established."
مَا الْحَاقَّةُ
mā l-ḥāqqah.
"What is the Inevitable Reality?" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:2)
Translation: "What is the coming inevitable event?"
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحَاقَّةُ
wa-mā adrāka mā l-ḥāqqah.
"And what will make you realise what the Inevitable Reality is?" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:3)
Wa-mā adrāka — and what did You inform you? Who informed you — what is the Ḥāqqa — what is the coming inevitable event? What is this calamity?
Translation: "And what will make you understand what the coming inevitable event is?"
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌ بِالْقَارِعَةِ
kadhdhabat thamūdu wa-ʿādun bi-l-qāriʿah.
"Thamūd and ʿĀd denied the Striking Calamity." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:4)
Kadhdhabat thamūdu wa-ʿād — Thamūd and ʿĀd denied its occurrence. Bi-l-qāriʿah — they denied — the striking, terrifying calamity — a tremendously shocking event — that is the Resurrection, meaning: at the Resurrection the gathering and dispersal and recompense of Allah, and the reckoning with Allah — they were not believers in the questioning and accountability.
Translation: "ʿĀd and Thamūd denied the Resurrection — (they were not believers in Allah's questioning)."
فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا بِالطَّاغِيَةِ
fa-ammā thamūdu fa-uhlikū bi-l-ṭāghiya.
"As for Thamūd — they were destroyed by the tyrannical blast." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:5)
Fa-ammā thamūd — but as for Thamūd — they were destroyed. Fa-uhlikū — they were ruined and destroyed. Bi-l-ṭāghiya — with the ṭāghiya — an intensely hard and violent sound — a ṭūfān — a devastating overwhelming force.
Translation: "But the people of Thamūd — they were destroyed — a violent and devastating sound."
وَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَأُهْلِكُوا بِرِيحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍ
wa-ammā ʿādun fa-uhlikū bi-rīḥin ṣarṣarin ʿātiya.
"And as for ʿĀd — they were destroyed by a violent howling wind." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:6)
Wa-ammā ʿād — and as for ʿĀd — they were destroyed. Fa-uhlikū — so they were ruined. Bi-rīḥin — with a wind — a harsh wind. Ṣarṣar — cold — a biting, icy, violently noisy wind. ʿĀtiya — intensely overwhelming — extremity, tyrant — storm, devastation.
Translation: "And the people of ʿĀd were destroyed by a single icy and overwhelming wind."
سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍ وَثَمَانِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًا فَتَرَى الْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍ
sakhkharahā ʿalayhim sabʿa layālin wa-thamāniyata ayyāmin ḥusūman fa-tarā l-qawma fīhā ṣarʿā ka-annahum aʿjāzu nakhlin khāwiya.
"He unleashed it upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession — so you could see the people fallen therein as though they were hollow trunks of palm-trees." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:7)
Sakhkharahā ʿalayhim — He subdued it over them, set it to task — sabʿa layālin wa-thamāniyata ayyām — seven nights and eight days. Ḥusūman — continuously — cutting off, finishing — some scholars hold that ḥusūm means continuity and relentlessness, layer upon layer. Fa-tarā l-qawm fīhā — then you would see those people in it — ṣarʿā — lying fallen. Ka-annahum — as if they were — the trunk of the palm-tree — aʿjāzu nakhlin — khāwiya — hollow, rotten, fallen, crumbling — hollow, broken, standing bare.
Translation: "He set it upon them continuously for seven nights and eight days — (O addressee!) at that time you would see the people lying there as though they were the hollow, fallen trunks of old rotten date-palms."
فَهَلْ تَرَىٰ لَهُم مِّن بَاقِيَةٍ
fa-hal tarā lahum min bāqiya.
"Do you see any remnant of them?" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:8)
Fa-hal tarā lahum — do you — the addressee! — see of them. Min bāqiya — any remnant — any survivor, anyone remaining? Do you see even one?
Translation: "Then do you see any trace of them remaining?"
وَجَاءَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَن قَبْلَهُ وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَاتُ بِالْخَاطِئَةِ
wa-jāʾa firʿawnu wa-man qablahu wa-l-muʾtafikātu bi-l-khāṭiʾa.
"And Pharaoh and those before him, and the overthrown cities came with sin." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:9)
Wa-jāʾa firʿawn — and Pharaoh came — they appeared. Wa-man qablahu — and those before Pharaoh — those who were before him. Wa-l-muʾtafikāt — and those towns and settlements which overturned — which were turned over by earthquakes. Bi-l-khāṭiʾa — with sins — with error and transgression — they came steeped in sin.
Translation: "And Pharaoh and those before him, and those towns and settlements that were overturned — came being among those steeped in sin and error — (their ways of error were theirs to answer for)."
فَعَصَوْا رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَهُمْ أَخْذَةً رَّابِيَةً
fa-ʿaṣaw rasūla rabbihim fa-akhadhahum akhdatan rābiya.
"So they disobeyed the Messenger of their Lord, and He seized them with a surpassing seizure." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:10)
Fa-ʿaṣaw — then they were disobedient — rasūla rabbihim — their Lord's Messenger — after that they disobeyed their Lord's Messenger. Fa-akhadhahum — then Allah seized them. Akhdatan rābiyatan — (zabiyā — to rise, to grow) — a surpassing seizure — severe and great.
Translation: "Then those people disobeyed their Lord's Messenger and thereby Allah (in a severe punishment) seized them and caught them firmly."
إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا الْمَاءُ حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ
innā lammā ṭaghā l-māʾu ḥamalnākum fī l-jāriya.
"Indeed when the water overflowed, We carried you in the running vessel." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:11)
Innā — indeed We — lammā — when. Ṭaghā l-māʾ — the water exceeded all bounds — it overflowed, went beyond its limit. Ḥamalnākum — We carried you — We bore you. Fī l-jāriya — in the moving vessel — in the flowing ship, a sailing vessel.
Translation: "When the water overflowed, We carried you in the sailing vessel."
لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةً وَتَعِيَهَا أُذُنٌ وَاعِيَةٌ
li-najʿalahā lakum tadhkiratan wa-taʿiyahā udhunun wāʿiya.
"That We might make it a reminder for you, and that a remembering ear might retain it." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:12)
Li-najʿalahā — so that We might make this event a reminder — lakum — for you — a tadhkira — a memorial, a lesson, a keepsake. Wa-taʿiyahā — and retain it — udhun — an ear — wāʿiya — receptive, preserving — a receptive and preserving ear.
Translation: "So that We might make this event a memorial and lesson for you — and those who listen and hear it keep it in their ears and hearts."
فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ
fa-idhā nufikha fī l-ṣūri nafkhatun wāḥida.
"Then when the Trumpet is blown — one single blast." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:13)
Fa-idhā — then, when. Nufikha — it will be blown. Fī l-ṣūr — in the Trumpet — in the Horn, the bugle. Nafkhatun wāḥidat — one single blast.
Translation: "Then when the bugle will sound a single blast."
وَحُمِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَاحِدَةً
wa-ḥumilati l-arḍu wa-l-jibālu fa-dukkātā dakkatan wāḥida.
"And the earth and the mountains are lifted and crushed together in a single crushing." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:14)
Wa-ḥumilati l-arḍu wa-l-jibāl — and the earth and the mountains — they will be raised up from their place. Fa-dukkātā — then they will be crushed and crumbled — both of them reduced to fine dust. Dakkatan wāḥida — in a single crushing — a single blow — utterly shattered, reduced to dust, scattered as one.
Translation: "And the earth and the mountains will be raised from their place and both crushed into powder in a single blow, scattered in all directions."
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ
fa-yawmaʾidhin waqaʿati l-wāqiʿa.
"Then on that Day the Event shall befall." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:15)
Fa-yawmaʾidh — then on that Day — this is the original — yawma idh waqaʿa kadhā — the Day on which such-and-such will occur. Waqaʿati l-wāqiʿa — the Event will befall — meaning: the Resurrection will arrive, the true reality will come.
Translation: "Then that Day the Event will befall — (the Resurrection will come)."
وَانشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ
wa-nshiqqati l-samāʾu fa-hiya yawmaʾidhin wāhiya.
"And the sky will split — and it will be, on that Day, frail and crumbling." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:16)
Wa-nshiqqati l-samāʾ — and the sky will split open — split apart. Fa-hiya yawmaʾidh — so it on that Day — wāhiya — will be frail — everywhere weakened and crumbling — scattered in every direction.
Translation: "And the sky will be split open — and on that Day it will be crumbling, scattered everywhere."
وَالْمَلَكُ عَلَىٰ أَرْجَائِهَا ۚ وَيَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَانِيَةٌ
wa-l-malaku ʿalā arjāʾihā wa-yaḥmilu ʿarsha rabbika fawqahum yawmaʾidhin thamāniya.
"And the angels will be on its margins — and on that Day eight shall bear the Throne of your Lord above them." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:17)
Wa-l-malaku — and the angels — they will be on its margins, on the borders. ʿAlā arjāʾihā — on its sides, its borders — on the edges. Wa-yaḥmilu ʿarsha rabbik — and your Lord's Throne will be borne — lifted above the established ones. Fawqahum — above them. Yawmaʾidh — on that Day. Thamāniya — eight — eight angels, four groups, eight beings, eight supreme forces.
The scholars hold that there are four supreme forces in this world — Jibrīl (peace be upon him), the centre of knowledge; Mīkāʾīl (peace be upon him), the centre of sustenance; Isrāfīl (peace be upon him), the centre of life; and ʿIzrāʾīl (peace be upon him), the centre of death — in the Hereafter all four work under the command of Allah, but in the Hereafter in place of four there will be eight angels.
Translation: "And the angels will be on the margins (edges) of the sky — and on that Day eight (mighty angels) above them will bear your Lord's Throne above them."
يَوْمَئِذٍ تُعْرَضُونَ لَا تَخْفَىٰ مِنكُمْ خَافِيَةٌ
yawmaʾidhin tuʿraḍūna lā takhfā minkum khāfiya.
"On that Day you will be presented — not a single hidden thing of yours will remain concealed." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:18)
Yawmaʾidh — on that Day. Tuʿraḍūna — you will be presented — you will be brought before the divine court. Lā takhfā — nothing will be hidden — no concealed thing will be hidden. Minkum — from you — from among you. Khāfiya — a hidden thing — any hidden condition, any covert deed, no intention, no act, no purpose, no plan.
Translation: "On that Day (in the divine court) before you nothing will remain hidden."
فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ فَيَقُولُ هَاؤُمُ اقْرَءُوا كِتَابِيَهْ
fa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu bi-yamīnihi fa-yaqūlu hāʾumu qraʾū kitābiyah.
"As for him who is given his Book in his right hand — he will say: here, read my Book!" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:19)
Fa-ammā man — then, that person who. Ūtiya kitābahu — is given his book, his record of deeds, his account-book. Bi-yamīnihi — in his right hand — in his right, straight hand — with this suitability there is one connection — moving the right hand is suitable. Fa-yaqūl — then he will say. Hāʾumu — here! come everyone! Iqraʾū kitābiyah — read my book — alas! my account-book — read it — my record of deeds — this is connected to the beautiful — the waqi — (waqf — a stop) — this stop in it is pleasant because it creates the connection that keeps lingering.
Translation: "Then the one given his record of deeds in his right hand will say: here! come and read my record of deeds!"
إِنِّي ظَنَنتُ أَنِّي مُلَاقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ
innī ẓanantu annī mulāqin ḥisābiyah.
"Indeed I believed I would face my reckoning." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:20)
Innī — indeed. Ẓanantu — I knew, I thought and believed. Ẓanna — the word ẓann also carries the sense of certainty in some usages. Annī — that. Mulāqin — I am one who meets, one who receives. Ḥisābiyah — my account-book.
Translation: "I knew from before that I would meet (receive) my account-book."
فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ
fa-huwa fī ʿīshatin rāḍiya.
"So he is in a pleasing life." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:21)
Fa-huwa — then the same person. Fī ʿīshatin rāḍiyat — in a pleasing life, a pleasant, desired existence, living in contentment, passing in a pleasing way.
Esteemed readers! This person is not merely content with his own life but is also content with this life of his — and that too is good.
Translation: "Then that person is in the most pleasant life."
فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ
fī jannatin ʿāliya.
"In a lofty Garden." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:22)
Translation: "In a lofty Garden — (in an elevated Paradise)."
قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةٌ
quṭūfuhā dāniya.
"Its fruit-clusters hanging low." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:23)
Quṭūfuhā — what garden is this? Quṭūfuhā — its fruits. Dāniyat — close, fruits — close to reach.
Translation: "Its fruits will be within easy reach — (the rewards of his deeds will come to him with ease)."
كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا هَنِيئًا بِمَا أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِي الْأَيَّامِ الْخَالِيَةِ
kulū wa-shrabū hanīʾan bi-mā aslaftum fī l-ayyāmi l-khāliya.
"Eat and drink with wholesome pleasure for what you sent ahead in the days gone by." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:24)
What will be said to those in Paradise?
Kulū wa-shrabū — eat and drink. Hanīʾan — contentedly, pleasantly, delightfully. Why? Bi-mā aslaftum — on account of what you sent ahead — on account of the good deeds you performed before. Fī l-ayyāmi l-khāliya — in the days gone by — the past times, before this — from before.
Translation: "Because of the past virtuous deeds you performed — eat and drink with contentment."
وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِشِمَالِهِ فَيَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أُوتَ كِتَابِيَهْ
wa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu bi-shimālihi fa-yaqūlu yā laytanī lam ūta kitābiyah.
"But as for him who is given his Book in his left hand — he will say: would that I had not been given my Book!" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:25)
Wa-ammā man — but that person whose. Ūtiya — is given — but the person whose record of deeds is given. Bi-shimālihi — in his left hand — his left. Fa-yaqūl — then he will say. Yā laytanī — would that I — how I wish. Lam ūta kitābiyah — that I had not been given my record of deeds — "had I not been given my record of deeds" he will say.
Translation: "And the one given his record of deeds in his left hand — that person will say: would that I had not been given my record of deeds."
وَلَمْ أَدْرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهْ
wa-lam adri mā ḥisābiyah.
"And had not known what my reckoning was!" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:26)
Wa-lam adri — and I would not know — my ḥisābiya — what my account-book would be — what my record would be.
Translation: "And would that I had not known what my reckoning would be — (would that my account had not been so)."
يَا لَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ الْقَاضِيَةَ
yā laytahā kānat al-qāḍiya.
"Would that it (death) had been the end!" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:27)
Yā laytahā — how I wish that death. Kānat al-qāḍiyat — had been the decisive end — qaḍā, yaqḍī — deciding, settling, making a final judgement — one who makes a final decision —
Translation: "Would that (the death of this world) had made the final decision — (finished things off, put the matter to rest)."
مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنِّي مَالِيَهْ
mā aghnan ʿannī mālyah.
"My wealth has not availed me!" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:28)
Mā aghnan ʿannī — it did not avail me at all — it was of no benefit. Mālyah — my wealth — it did not avail me — my property.
Translation: "My wealth was of no benefit to me at all."
هَلَكَ عَنِّي سُلْطَانِيَهْ
halaka ʿannī sulṭāniyah.
"My authority has perished from me!" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:29)
Halaka ʿannī — from me it has perished — gone away, dissolved, destroyed. Sulṭāniyah — my authority, my kingship, my sovereignty — the power, the dominion.
Translation: "Alas, my sovereignty and kingship have abandoned me — my dominion is gone."
خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ
khudhūhu fa-ghullūh.
"Seize him and fetter him." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:30)
The related angels will say: khudhūhu — seize him — take hold of him, arrest and apprehend him. Fa-ghullūh — then shackle him — put a shackle on his neck — ghull — meaning a collar, a yoke.
Translation: "Seize him — take hold of him — put a collar and chains on him."
ثُمَّ الْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ
thumma l-jaḥīma ṣallūh.
"Then roast him in the Blazing Fire." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:31)
Thumma l-jaḥīm — then in Hell — ṣallūh — enter him, put him in — ṣalā — to enter, to push inside — push in by force — entering, knocking in by pushing with force.
Translation: "Then drive him forcibly into the Hellfire."
ثُمَّ فِي سِلْسِلَةٍ ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعًا فَاسْلُكُوهُ
thumma fī silsilatin dharʿuhā sabʿūna dhirāʿan fa-slukūh.
"Then thread him in a chain whose length is seventy cubits." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:32)
Thumma fī silsilatin — then in a chain — with a chain. Dharʿuhā — its measurement, whose length. Sabʿūna dhirāʿā — seventy cubits — that is: very long, arm-span by arm-span. Fa-slukūh — then enter him with it, pass him through — maslak — path, route — sālik — one who travels.
Translation: "Then thread him through a seventy-cubit chain — and pass him through."
إِنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ
innahu kāna lā yuʾminu bi-llāhi l-ʿaẓīm.
"Indeed he did not believe in Allah, the Mighty." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:33)
Innahu kāna lā yuʾmin — he did not have faith — he did not believe. Bi-llāhi l-ʿaẓīm — in Allah, the Mighty — in Allah the Great — in the Mighty Lord.
Translation: "This person did not believe in Allah, the Mighty."
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
wa-lā yaḥuḍḍu ʿalā ṭaʿāmi l-miskīn.
"Nor did he urge the feeding of the poor." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:34)
Wa-lā yaḥuḍḍu — and he would not urge, would not encourage. ʿAlā ṭaʿāmi l-masākīn — towards feeding the destitute and the poor — he was not encouraging anyone to feed them.
Translation: "He would not urge people to feed the poor and destitute."
فَلَيْسَ لَهُ الْيَوْمَ هَاهُنَا حَمِيمٌ
fa-laysa lahu l-yawma hāhunā ḥamīm.
"So he has no close friend here today." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:35)
Fa-laysa lah — so for him there is not. Al-yawm — today — this Day. Hāhunā — here — ḥamīm — close friend — there is no close friend.
Translation: "Therefore today he has no close friend here."
وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ
wa-lā ṭaʿāmun illā min ghislīn.
"Nor any food except the wound-washings." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:36)
Wa-lā ṭaʿām — and there is no food for him. Illā min ghislīn — except from ghislīn — but the wound-wash of the sores — the wound-washings of cuts, the liquid draining from wounds.
Translation: "And there is nothing for him to eat except the draining from wounds — (pus and discharge)."
لَّا يَأْكُلُهُ إِلَّا الْخَاطِئُونَ
lā yaʾkuluhu illā l-khāṭiʾūn.
"None shall eat it except the sinners." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:37)
Lā yaʾkuluhu — they will not eat this food. Illā l-khāṭiʾūn — except the wicked, sinners — but only the wrongdoers will eat it.
Translation: "Only the wrongdoers will eat this food."
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُونَ
fa-lā uqsimu bi-mā tubṣirūn.
"So I swear by what you see." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:38)
Fa-lā — I swear not by. Uqsimu — I swear — I keep presenting before you in testimony. Bi-mā tubṣirūn — by all things you see — I am giving testimony of all worldly conditions (such as the moral character of the Prophet ﷺ).
Translation: "No! I swear not — but I present testimony of all things I see before you — (all that you see)."
وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُونَ
wa-mā lā tubṣirūn.
"And what you do not see." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:39)
Wa-mā lā tubṣirūn — and those things you do not see (the metaphysical, spiritual realities, beliefs) — let all of these be the light of your perception.
Translation: "And (I give testimony also of) those things you do not see."
إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ
innahu la-qawlu rasūlin karīm.
"Indeed it is the word of a noble Messenger." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:40)
Innahu — without doubt it is. La-qawlu rasūl — the word of the Messenger, the speech — this is the word of Allah, Muhammad the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, which has been revealed through the medium of Jibrīl. Karīmun — who is noble, great.
Translation: "Without doubt this is the word of Allah which has been sent through the medium of a noble and great messenger."
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تُؤْمِنُونَ
wa-mā huwa bi-qawli shāʿirin qalīlan mā tuʾminūn.
"And it is not the word of a poet — little do you believe!" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:41)
Wa-mā huwa — and this is not. Bi-qawli shāʿir — a poet's speech. Qalīlan mā tuʾminūn — and you have very little belief — you believe hardly at all, nothing.
Translation: "This is not a poet's speech — for you bring no faith at all."
وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ
wa-lā bi-qawli kāhinin qalīlan mā tadhakkarūn.
"Nor is it the word of a soothsayer — little do you remember!" (al-Ḥāqqa 69:42)
Wa-lā bi-qawli kāhin — and this is not a fortune-teller's or soothsayer's speech. Qalīlan mā tadhakkarūn — you barely remember, you rarely reflect — you take no heed even though you hear.
Translation: "And this is not a soothsayer's speech — for you never take guidance and heed."
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
tanzīlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīn.
"A Revelation from the Lord of all the worlds." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:43)
Tanzīl — it has been sent down — revealed, descended. Min rabbi l-ʿālamīn — from the Lord of all worlds — from the Lord of all creation, from all the worlds.
Translation: "This is the word sent down from the Lord of all creation."
وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ الْأَقَاوِيلِ
wa-law taqawwala ʿalaynā baʿḍa l-aqāwīl.
"And if he had fabricated about Us any sayings." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:44)
Wa-law taqawwala ʿalaynā — and if concerning Us he were to say, to forge lies, to attribute falsehoods. Baʿḍa l-aqāwīl — some sayings — some statements, some words.
Translation: "And if he had forged even a single lie about Us."
لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِالْيَمِينِ
la-akhadhnā minhu bi-l-yamīn.
"We would certainly have seized him by the right hand." ((al-Ḥāqqa 69:45)
La-akhadhnā minhu — We would certainly have seized them — taken hold of them. Bi-l-yamīnin — with the right hand — this is pointing to the seat of power — with the right hand, with power.
Translation: "We would certainly have seized them by the throat."
ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِينَ
thumma la-qaṭaʿnā minhu l-watīn.
"Then surely We would have severed their life-vein." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:46)
Thumma la-qaṭaʿnā — then We would certainly have cut. Minhu — from them. Al-watīn — their life-vein — the aorta, the heart, the spinal cord.
Translation: "Then We would certainly have cut their life-vein."
فَمَا مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ عَنْهُ حَاجِزِينَ
fa-mā minkum min aḥadin ʿanhu ḥājizīn.
"And not one of you could have held Us back from him." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:47)
Fa-mā minkum min aḥad — then from among you there is no one. ʿAnhu — from them. Ḥājizīna — a restrainer, a preventer, one who holds back.
Translation: "Then there would be none among you to save them from Us."
وَإِنَّهُ لَتَذْكِرَةٌ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
wa-innahu la-tadhkiratun li-l-muttaqīn.
"And indeed it is a reminder for the God-fearing." (al-Ḥāqqa 69:48)
Wa-innahu la-tadhkirat — and without doubt this is a reminder, a single memorandum. Li-l-muttaqīn — for the God-fearing, the pious — but for whom? For the devout and God-fearing.
Translation: "And without doubt this is a reminder and memorandum for the devout and God-fearing."
Here ends Sūrat al-Ḥāqqa — may Allah's blessings be upon our Master the Prophet ﷺ, upon his family, and upon all who follow them.
