Sūrat al-Maʿārij
سورۃ المعارج
Revealed in Makkah. 44 verses. 2 sections (rukūʿ).
Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ
saʾala sāʾilun bi-ʿadhābin wāqiʿ.
"A questioner asked about a punishment about to befall." (al-Maʿārij 70:1)
Saʾala sāʾilun — a questioner asked — he posed a question. (As a mode of denial.) He asked what the coming punishment would be — bi-ʿadhābin wāqiʿ — about the impending punishment, the punishment that will befall — concerning the punishment that is bound to come — concerning the punishment of the promised punishment (when will it come?).
Translation: "One who posed a question (as denial) asked concerning the punishment that is to come (when will it arrive?)."
لِّلْكَافِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ
li-l-kāfirīna laysa lahu dāfiʿ.
"For the disbelievers — there is none to repel it." (al-Maʿārij 70:2)
Li-l-kāfirīna — for the disbelievers and the unbelievers. Laysa lahu dāfiʿun — there is no repeller of it — no one to repel it.
Translation: "For the disbelievers — (this punishment is set to come) — there is no one to repel it (from where will this punishment come?)."
مِّنَ اللَّهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِ
min allāhi dhī l-maʿārij.
"From Allah, the Lord of the Ascending Stairways." (al-Maʿārij 70:3)
Mina l-llāh — from the side of Allah — from Allah. Dhī l-maʿārij — the One who possesses high degrees — maʿārij — collectively, stairs — ladders. That which Allah has are lofty ranks and high stations — (He is of very great ranks).
Translation: "It will come from Allah — (Who has very great and lofty ranks)."
تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
taʿruju l-malāʾikatu wa-l-rūḥu ilayhi fī yawmin kāna miqḍāruh khamsīna alfa sana.
"The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a Day whose measure is fifty thousand years." (al-Maʿārij 70:4)
Taʿruju l-malāʾikat — the angels ascend — they climb on the degrees, stations appearing on different levels. Wa-l-rūḥ — and the Rūḥ — meaning righteous people, the holy servants who are established at their stations near Allah. Ilayhi — toward Allah. Fī yawmin — on a Day, the Day, that is, the Day of Resurrection. Kāna miqḍāruhu — whose measure, whose extent. Khamsīna alfa sanah — fifty thousand years — a day of fifty thousand years.
This means that in this world there are four supreme forces — Jibrīl, Mīkāʾīl, Isrāfīl, ʿIzrāʾīl — in the Hereafter four will become eight angels. And the angelic beings will come in different forms of manifestation.
Translation: "On the angels and holy souls who ascend to Allah in different degrees there appears a Day (of Resurrection) whose measure is fifty thousand years — (meaning it is a very long time)."
فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا
fa-ṣbir ṣabran jamīlā.
"So be patient with a beautiful patience." (al-Maʿārij 70:5)
Fa-ṣbir — O Prophet ﷺ! be patient — wait. Ṣabran jamīlā — a beautiful patience — a good patience — be patient with full tranquility — there is no anxiety in it — do not be troubled by the words of the disbelievers and do not be perturbed by their speech.
Translation: "(O Prophet ﷺ!) be very patient — (a patience) without anxiety."
Translation: "(O Prophet ﷺ!) be very patient."
إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَعِيدًا
innahum yarawnahū baʿīdā.
"Indeed they see it as far." (al-Maʿārij 70:6)
Innahum yarawnahū — without doubt these disbelievers see the Day of Resurrection. Baʿīdā — far — they see it far, distant.
Translation: "These disbelievers regard the coming of the Day of Resurrection as distant."
وَنَرَاهُ قَرِيبًا
wa-narāhu qarībā.
"But We see it as near." (al-Maʿārij 70:7)
Wa-narah — and We see this Day, We consider it. Qarībā — near — We see it near.
Translation: "And We regard this (Day) as near."
يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ
yawma takūnu l-samāʾu ka-l-muhl.
"The Day the sky will be like molten ore." (al-Maʿārij 70:8)
Yawma takūnu l-samāʾ — the Day the sky will be. Ka-l-muhl — like molten ore — some say it will become like melted silver and gold, the sediment of oil; some say like oil — they will become like oil dregs.
Translation: "The Day the sky will become like molten metal (it will be stretched apart)."
وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ
wa-takūnu l-jibālu ka-l-ʿihn.
"And the mountains will be like dyed wool." (al-Maʿārij 70:9)
Wa-takūnu l-jibāl — and the mountains will become. Ka-l-ʿihn — like dyed wool — like dyed wool — the wool of multi-coloured, dyed, tinted wool.
Translation: "And the mountains will become like dyed, coloured wool."
وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا
wa-lā yasʾalu ḥamīmun ḥamīmā.
"And no close friend will ask after a close friend." (al-Maʿārij 70:10)
Wa-lā yasʾal — and he will not ask. Ḥamīmun ḥamīmā — a close friend — ḥamīm — hot water, steam, close friend — a boiling, overflowing, zealous close friend.
Translation: "And a close friend will not ask after a close friend."
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ
yubaṣṣarūnahum yawaddu l-mujrimu law yaftadī min ʿadhābi yawmaʾidhin bi-banīh.
"They will be shown to each other — the criminal wishes he could ransom himself from the punishment of that Day through his sons." (al-Maʿārij 70:11)
Yubaṣṣarūnahum — despite this they will be shown — they will see each other — but a criminal will not come to anyone's aid. Yawaddu l-mujrum — the criminal will yearn — he wishes to ransom. Law yaftadī — if he could give a ransom, could give compensation. Min ʿadhābi yawmaʾidh — from the punishment of that Day. Bi-banīh — through his sons — despite seeing his children there is no call and no longing — the criminal wishes (but can do nothing to help anyone), if someone ransom him from the punishment of that Day — (tries to redeem him) he would offer his sons in exchange.
Translation: "Despite this they will see one another (but the criminal will not come to any companion's aid — they try to redeem themselves) — the criminal will wish that he could ransom himself from the punishment of that Day — (he will try to offer) his sons."
وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ
wa-ṣāḥibatihi wa-akhīh.
"And his wife and his brother." (al-Maʿārij 70:12)
Wa-ṣāḥibatihi — and his companion — meaning his wife. Wa-akhīh — and his brother — and would offer his brother in ransom.
Translation: "And (he will try to give) his wife and brother — (offer them all in place of himself)."
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْوِيهِ
wa-faṣīlatih allatī tuʾwīh.
"And his kindred who sheltered him." (al-Maʿārij 70:13)
Wa-faṣīlatih — and his close kinsmen, his tribe, his people, his family who give him shelter. Allatī tuʾwīh — who shelters him — who gives him refuge, gives him resting place, gives him shelter, who embraces and shelters him.
Translation: "And (he will try to offer) those of his people who have sheltered him (he would offer them all as ransom)."
وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
wa-man fī l-arḍi jamīʿan thumma yunjīh.
"And all those on earth — that then it would save him." (al-Maʿārij 70:14)
Wa-man fī l-arḍ — and those who are on the earth. Jamīʿan — all — every one — then all of them together he would offer as ransom.
Translation: "And (he would wish to offer) all the people on earth as ransom — so that some rescue could be given."
كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
kallā innahā laẓā.
"Never! Indeed it is a fierce blazing flame." (al-Maʿārij 70:15)
Kallā — never — it is impossible — such could never happen. Innahā laẓā — indeed this is without doubt a Hellfire.
Translation: "Never — this can never be — this is the very Hellfire."
نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ
nazzāʿatan li-l-shawā.
"Tearing away the scalp." (al-Maʿārij 70:16)
Nazzāʿat — pulling away, stripping off — stripping bare. Li-l-shawā — the scalp — pulling away the skull's skin, the skin of the feet and hands.
Translation: "It is one that strips away the skin of the hands and the feet's skin — (it is the one that pulls off the skin of the head)."
تَدْعُو مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
tadʿū man adbara wa-tawallā.
"Calling him who turned away and departed." (al-Maʿārij 70:17)
Tadʿū — it will call — it will summon, more so the Arabic in the Quran is additional. Man adbara — whoever turned away — man adhhaba — whoever departed, turned away, showed his back, turned his back. Wa-tawallā — and turned away — whoever showed indifference and lack of loyalty to God.
Translation: "(Hellfire) will summon that person who (showed his back to God and) turned away and did not turn toward God."
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰ
wa-jamaʿa fa-awʿā.
"And who gathered and hoarded." (al-Maʿārij 70:18)
Wa-jamaʿa — and gathered and stored well. Fa-awʿā — then raised up, hoarded it, kept its guard.
Translation: "And one who gathered wealth and hoarded it."
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
inna l-insāna khuliqa halūʿā.
"Indeed the human being is created restless." (al-Maʿārij 70:19)
Inna l-insān — without doubt the human being. Khuliqa — was created. Halūʿā — restless — impatient, faint-hearted — a person of little patience.
Translation: "Without doubt the human being is born impatient."
إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا
idhā massahu l-sharru jazūʿā.
"When adversity touches him, he is despairing." (al-Maʿārij 70:20)
Idhā massahu l-sharr — when harm touches him — when an affliction befalls him — a misfortune arrives. Jazūʿā — he is fretful and lamenting — jazaʿ — panicking, distressed and restless.
Translation: "When some hardship befalls him he becomes panicked and despondent — (he loses heart)."
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا
wa-idhā massahu l-khayru manūʿā.
"And when good fortune touches him, he withholds." (al-Maʿārij 70:21)
Wa-idhā massahu l-khayr — and when wealth reaches him, good fortune comes. Manūʿā — he is withholding, one who prevents — he holds back and does not give to others — he is miserly.
Translation: "And when wealth reaches him he gives nothing to others."
So who is freed from this? Who is exempt from this?
إِلَّا الْمُصَلِّينَ
illā l-muṣallīn.
"Except those who pray." (al-Maʿārij 70:22)
Translation: "Except the disciplined, faithful Muslims."
الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ
alladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim dāʾimūn.
"Those who are constant in their prayer." (al-Maʿārij 70:23)
Alladhīna hum — those who. ʿAlā ṣalātihim — their own prayer — they are always staying on it. Dāʾimūna — they are constant — they are always remaining.
Translation: "(But those pious believers and worshippers) who are constant on their prayer."
وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ
wa-lladhīna fī amwālihim ḥaqqun maʿlūm.
"And in whose wealth there is a recognized right." (al-Maʿārij 70:24)
Wa-lladhīna — and those people who. Fī amwālihim — in their wealth. Ḥaqqun maʿlūm — there is a recognised right — which is the zakāt — charities.
Translation: "And those people whose wealth has a recognised right set upon it — (they give zakāt because they know from whom zakāt is to be taken)."
لِّلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ
li-l-sāʾili wa-l-maḥrūm.
"For the beggar and the deprived." (al-Maʿārij 70:25)
Is wealth given to them? Li-l-sāʾil — for the one who asks, the one who begs. Wa-l-maḥrūm — and those who have not reached — and those who do not reach the door — maḥrūm — those who are from outside the word as those people who do not enter any household at all — who cannot come.
Translation: "(This wealth is given) to those who ask and to those who do not ask."
It is clear that not asking is great because on the Day of Resurrection that too will bow its head before it. A virtue in this too — not asking is greatly virtuous. But indeed this too is bad for the world — because if not asking becomes a motivation for stopping charities for the poor — through them the upbringing of the poor is hindered. They are orphans, widows, the disabled — the orphan homes, the widows' homes — those who care for them — how many people are under their upbringing, and what is their income? — how will the situation of those who keep them well be? And who else is a dependent? They themselves — for this community's betterment, when will it be good?
No organisation — no factories — no such workshops where the poor are employed who keep them under their care — Orphan homes, widows' homes — the disabled homes — those who care for the leaders of the people. Who are the widows? Who are the orphans? And the disabled? Who is a dependent? They themselves — and the community's welfare is not visible. Now tell — the welfare of this community — how will things be good?
وَالَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ
wa-lladhīna yuṣaddiqūna bi-yawmi l-dīn.
"And those who affirm faith in the Day of Recompense." (al-Maʿārij 70:26)
Wa-lladhīna yuṣaddiqūn — and those people who give credence — they testify. Bi-yawmi l-dīn — in the Day of Recompense — trusting in the Day of Recompense, meaning the Day of Resurrection.
Translation: "And those who affirm faith in the Day of Resurrection — (they acknowledge it)."
وَالَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ
wa-lladhīna hum min ʿadhābi rabbihim mushfiqūn.
"And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord." (al-Maʿārij 70:27)
Wa-lladhīna hum — and those people who. Min ʿadhābi rabbihim — from their Lord's punishment — from their own Sustainer's punishment. Mushfiqūna — they are fearful — shafaqa — ishrāq — to be fearful, to be compassionate — to be afraid. Actually the word yushfiq is the form ashfaqa yushfiqu ishrāqan — it is used in the verbal form from ishrāq.
Translation: "And those who fear their Lord's punishment."
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ
inna ʿadhāba rabbihim ghayru maʾmūn.
"Indeed their Lord's punishment is not to be felt secure from." (al-Maʿārij 70:28)
Inna ʿadhāba rabbihim — indeed the punishment of their Lord — their own God's punishment. Ghayru maʾmūn — is not safe to feel secure from — no one can feel safe from it — it is possible to come without warning — one can be safe and at rest and free of worry.
Translation: "Without doubt no one can feel fully secure from their Lord's punishment."
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ
wa-lladhīna hum li-furūjihim ḥāfiẓūn.
"And those who guard their private parts." (al-Maʿārij 70:29)
Wa-lladhīna hum — and those people who. Li-furūjihim — their private parts. Ḥāfiẓūna — they guard — they guard their private parts — they protect them from what is impermissible.
Translation: "And those who guard their own private parts."
إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ
illā ʿalā azwājihim aw mā malakat aymānahum fa-innahum ghayru malūmīn.
"Except with their wives or what their right hands possess — then indeed they are not blameworthy." (al-Maʿārij 70:30)
Illā ʿalā azwājihim — except their own wives. Aw mā malakat aymānahum — or those women their right hands possess — the lawful female captives. Fa-innahum ghayru malūmīn — then indeed they are not blameworthy — it is not binding to blame them in bodily relations, because it is not binding to blame wives to keep relations with them — rather going to the wives is the duty that belongs to them — they are deserving of it, entitled to it.
Esteemed readers! In this verse the Qurʾān Sharīf gives permission for bodily relations to be established with women in two forms only — one, a wife, meaning a contractually married woman — and two, female captives whose ownership in war was established. According to the Qurʾān Sharīf these two types are the mentioned categories of lawful women. This was the pre-Islamic custom. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared this forbidden. It was declared by Sayyidunā ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) and then Sayyidunā ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) declared it, and its public declaration (idhāʿa) was made in their era — (according to the narration of al-Tirmidhī).
The fact is that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had not given it a ruling in terms of the general public decree — rather Sayyidunā ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave no ruling, but rather made the people aware of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ command. And in this same manner Sayyidunā ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) also made it public in his era — the people in whose hands the women were — those women whose purity is known?
فَمَنِ ابْتَغَىٰ وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ
fa-man ibtaghā warāʾa dhālika fa-ulāʾika humu l-ʿādūn.
"And whoever seeks beyond that — those are the transgressors." (al-Maʿārij 70:31)
Fa-man ibtaghā — then whoever seeks. Warāʾa dhālik — beyond that — outside of the bounds of these two categories of fornication, and beyond these boundaries. Fa-ulāʾika humu l-ʿādūna — those people are — al-ʿādūn — the transgressors, the people who go beyond bounds — they are undoubtedly the people who go beyond the bounds of purity.
Translation: "Then whoever goes beyond this — those people are without doubt the ones who go beyond bounds."
Note on this verse: This verse gives permission for relations with two categories of women — one, a wife meaning a contractually bound wife, and two, a captive woman. Both of these are permissible by the Quran. According to Sharīʿa, a permissible wife is one who is an inherited wife — a wife by contract — or a captive woman. Both are lawful and there is no blame upon them.
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ
wa-lladhīna hum li-amānātihim wa-ʿahdihim rāʿūn.
"And those who faithfully keep their trusts and their covenants." (al-Maʿārij 70:32)
Wa-lladhīna hum — and those people who. Li-amānātihim — their trusts — the things entrusted to others, the things kept by others. Wa-ʿahdihim — and their covenants — their promises, their pledges. Rāʿūna — they guard — they watch over, they take care of and maintain them.
Translation: "And those who maintain all trusts they were given and all pledges and agreements — they watch over them — (they guard them)."
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ قَائِمُونَ
wa-lladhīna hum bi-shahādātihim qāʾimūn.
"And those who are upright in their testimonies." (al-Maʿārij 70:33)
Wa-lladhīna hum — and those people who. Bi-shahādātihim — their testimonies — their own witnessed matters — they stand upright on them. Qāʾimūna — they are established — not among them making errors, but they remember rightly and give proper testimony.
Translation: "Those who stand upright on their testimonies and bear witness faithfully."
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ
wa-lladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim yuḥāfiẓūn.
"And those who carefully maintain their prayers." (al-Maʿārij 70:34)
Wa-lladhīna hum — and those people who. ʿAlā ṣalātihim — their own prayers. Yuḥāfiẓūna — they carefully maintain — they guard, guarding times — they adhere to times.
Translation: "And those who guard their prayers (and their times)."
أُولَٰئِكَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ
ulāʾika fī jannātin mukramūn.
"Those will be in Gardens, honoured." (al-Maʿārij 70:35)
Ulāʾika — those people. Fī jannāt — in gardens — they will be in Paradise. Mukramūna — they will be honoured — with honour and nobility together.
Translation: "These very people will be in Paradise with honour and respect."
فَمَالِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ
fa-māli l-ladhīna kafarū qibalaka muhṭiʿīn.
"Then what is the matter with those who disbelieve — rushing toward you?" (al-Maʿārij 70:36)
Fa-māli l-ladhīna kafarū — then what has happened to the disbelievers? Qibalak — toward you — your direction. Muhṭiʿīna — they are rushing — they are running.
Translation: "Then what has happened to the disbelievers that they come running toward you?"
عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
ʿani l-yamīni wa-ʿani l-shimāli ʿizīn.
"From right and from left — in groups." (al-Maʿārij 70:37)
ʿAni l-yamīn — from the right side. Wa-ʿani l-shimāl — and from the left side. ʿIzīn — forming groups — forming congregations.
Translation: "From the right and from the left making congregations."
أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ
a-yaṭmaʿu kullu mriʾin minhum an yudkhala jannata naʿīm.
"Does each one of them expect to be admitted into a Garden of Bliss?" (al-Maʿārij 70:38)
A-yaṭmaʿu — do they expect — these disbelievers rushing toward the Prophet ﷺ and also have a hope. Kullu mriʾin minhum — each one from among them. An yudkhala — that he will be entered — that every one among them. Jannata naʿīm — in Paradise of blessings — in the Garden of Bliss.
Translation: "Do they each expect that they will be entered into the Garden of Bliss?"
كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ
kallā innā khalaqnāhum mimmā yaʿlamūn.
"Never! We created them from what they know." (al-Maʿārij 70:39)
Kallā — never — this too is impossible. Innā khalaqnāhum — without doubt We created them — We fashioned them. Mimmā yaʿlamūna — from that thing which they know — which they also know — that origin and foundation — from which We created them — they also know — the impure origin, the base sperm.
Translation: "Never — We have created them from that thing from which We have created them and they too are well aware of it."
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ إِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَ
fa-lā uqsimu bi-rabbi l-mashāriqi wa-l-maghāribi innā la-qādirūn.
"No! I swear by the Lord of the Easts and Wests — indeed We are able." (al-Maʿārij 70:40)
Fa-lā — then no! Uqsim — I swear — I keep presenting testimony of all worldly conditions. Bi-rabb al-mashāriqi wa-l-maghārib — by the Lord of the East and West — and I swear the power of this Lord and give testimony of it. Mashāriq — Easts — Maghārib — Wests — the sun rises from different places in different seasons — it is from the North, from the South and East and West to 23 ½ degrees. Innā la-qādirūn — indeed We are able — without doubt We are capable in every way.
Translation: "No! I swear by the Lord of the East and West and present testimony of His power (and the sun rises from different positions in different seasons) — that We are able in every way."
عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
ʿalā an nubaddila khayran minhum wa-mā naḥnu bi-masbūqīn.
"To replace them with better than them — and We are not to be outrun." (al-Maʿārij 70:41)
ʿAlā an nubaddil — that We can replace — We can substitute. Khayran minhum — better than them — with better people in their place. We can replace them with better people who come after. Wa-mā naḥnu bi-masbūqīn — and We are not outrun — We are not those who are left behind — We are not outdone — We are not prevented, We are not blocked.
Translation: "(We are able) to remove them (in exchange) and bring better people to replace them — and We cannot be overtaken or held back."
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
fa-dharhum yakhūḍū wa-yalʿabū ḥattā yulāqū yawmahumu l-ladhī yūʿadūn.
"So leave them to plunge and play until they meet their Day that they are promised." (al-Maʿārij 70:42)
Fa-dharhum — O Prophet ﷺ! then let them go — leave them to it. Yakhūḍū — they plunge into it — the Arabic al-Qurʾān being additional. Wa-yalʿabū — and play — being engrossed in play and trivialities. Ḥattā yulāqū — until they meet — they come here, come to meet one another. Yawmahumu — their Day — the Day of Resurrection. Al-ladhī yūʿadūn — which has been promised to them — the promise of which has been made to them.
Translation: "(O Prophet ﷺ!) leave them to empty words and play — until they reach the Day of Resurrection that has been promised to them."
يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ
yawma yakhrujūna mina l-ajdāthi sirāʿan ka-annahum ilā nuṣubin yūfiḍūn.
"The Day they come forth from the graves in haste — as though they are rushing toward a goal." (al-Maʿārij 70:43)
Yawma yakhrujūna — the Day they will come out. Mina l-ajdāth — from the graves — quickly, hurriedly. Sirāʿan — in haste, with speed. Ka-annahum — as if they are. Ilā nuṣub — toward a target, a marker, a sign. Yūfiḍūna — they run — they rush.
Translation: "The Day people will run out from the graves — as though they are rushing toward some target (they are running toward their idol)."
خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ
khāshiʿatan abṣāruhum tarhaquhum dhillatun dhālika l-yawmu l-ladhī kānū yūʿadūn.
"Their eyes cast down, humiliation overwhelming them — that is the Day that they were promised." (al-Maʿārij 70:44)
Khāshiʿatan abṣāruhum — their eyes cast down with shame, shamed to the extent of eyes cast down. Tarhaquhum dhillat — humiliation will overwhelm them — shame and humiliation will overwhelm them. Dhālika l-yawm — that very Day — al-ladhī kānū yūʿadūn — which was promised to them — the promise of which was made to them.
Translation: "(With shame) their eyes will be downcast — humiliation will overwhelm them — this is that Day that was promised to them."
Here ends Sūrat al-Maʿārij — may Allah's blessings be upon our Master the Prophet ﷺ, upon his family, and upon all who follow them.
