Among the most eminent of the scholars of this age, Hazrat Bahr-ul-Uloom (Sea of Knowledge) Muhammad Abdul Qadeer Siddiqui — may Allah have mercy upon him — was a distinguished personality of Hyderabad (Deccan). He was born on Friday, 24 Rajab 1288 AH (13–14 October 1871 CE) in Hyderabad. He passed the Punjab University examinations with first class and obtained the degree of Maulawi Fazil. He then went to the famous Osmania University in Hyderabad, where he was appointed as Professor and Head of the Department of Religious Sciences, and later as its Vice-Chancellor. By royal decree he continued in service for many years. He published the complete Urdu commentary of the Qur'an under the title Tafseer Siddiqui in 1931 from Hyderabad. From the Hyderabad Academy he published the research treatise 'The Problem of Naskh (Abrogation) in the Qur'an', in which he proved from the Qur'an and Sunnah that there is no abrogation in the manner people commonly suppose. He translated the Arabic work of al-Shaykh al-Akbar (Ibn ʿArabī) — a work that was translated from Darul Ulum Osmania University and became widely published. He was also adept in poetry in Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and Hindi; his collection of poetry was published under the title Kulliyaat-e-Hasrat. He passed away on 17 Shawwal 1381 AH (23 March 1962 CE), departing this world at an advanced age. — Muhammad Abbas Ali Bardari Siddiqui, Administrator, Hasrat Academy and Siddiq Gulshan Library, Hyderabad.
