Chapter: On Trust in Allah
On Trust in Allah (Tawakkul)
"And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him." (Al-Talaq, 65:3)
"And upon Allah let the believers rely." (Al-Imran, 3:122). The author clarifies: Tawakkul does not mean abandoning material means. Rather, it means using the means that Allah's system of causation requires, while placing complete reliance upon Allah rather than upon the means themselves.
"And Musa (Moses) said: O my people, if you have believed in Allah, then rely upon Him, if you should be Muslims." (Yunus, 10:84). Trust in Allah is thus an integral expression of both faith and Islam.
Narrated by Ibn 'Umar ('Abdullah ibn 'Umar) (may Allah be pleased with them both): I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He deserves, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they go out in the morning with empty stomachs and return in the evening with full ones.' (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah — Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ)
Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, and in each there is good. Be eager for what benefits you, seek help from Allah and do not be helpless; and if something afflicts you, do not say: If only I had done such and such. Rather say: Allah decreed it and what He willed He did. For the word "if only" opens the door for Satan.' (Muslim)
