Chapter: On the Companionship of the Righteous
On the Companionship of the Righteous
"O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with the truthful." (Al-Tawba, 9:119). The author elaborates: Companionship (suhba) exerts a profound formative influence on the soul, shaping character, orientation, and even one's destiny in the Hereafter. Choosing righteous companions is therefore a religious obligation.
Narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him): 'The example of a righteous companion and a bad companion is like that of the carrier of musk and the blower of the bellows. From the carrier of musk you either buy it or find its fragrance; from the blower of the bellows, either your body burns, or your clothes burn, or you find a foul smell.' (Bukhari)
The author continues: Just as souls congregate in this world according to affinity, so too on the Day of Judgment. A person will be gathered with those he loves, and will be judged by the character of those with whom he chose to spend his time. Choosing righteous company is therefore not mere personal preference but a spiritual and religious obligation.
