Belief and Deed (عقیدہ و عمل)

لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُكُمْ

'Let neither your wealth nor your children distract you' (al-Munafiqun 63:9). The first error in gnosis ('aql al-ma'rifa) has been extracted from this — now the error in deeds is being extracted: 'Do not let your wealth and children make you neglectful of any work of Allah's — do not cause negligence regarding any of Allah's matters' — the wrong belief has been extracted — the error from wrong belief — the 'aqida has been corrected — now for action, he shows the method of using it — (meaning: in the path of action the wealth-producing things and riches are for spending them on this — and the use of lawful and halal instruction has been given).

Sahibo! A person's belief must be correct and his deeds must also be correct — deeds are of two kinds: one connected to one's own self, the other connected to others — the second are connected to others. In the second form there is a need for wealth — Allah the Exalted says: 'Do not look toward others, do not be attentive — this is tawhid-i'tiqadi (unity in belief).' And the other is 'tawhid fi al-irada fi al-'amal (unity in will and deed).' A person can manage everything connected to himself — but the great difficulty comes at the time of discharging the rights of others — this is a form of 'tawhid fi al-irada fi al-'amal' — wealth is a great entanglement, but it is better by far.

The verse is quoted with great force — the next portion of that verse is: يا أيها الذين آمنوا أنفقوا من ما رزقناكم من قبل أن يأتي يوم لابيع فيه ولا خلة ولا شفاعة والكافرون هم الظالمون — 'O you who believe! Spend from what We have provided you before a day comes in which there is no trade, no friendship, and no intercession — and the disbelievers are the wrongdoers' (al-Baqarah 2:254). Sahibo! 'Spend from what We gave you on Allah's path — before the day comes when no buying will be possible, and no intercessor will be found, and no protection will be there.' — 'Everything is His. Why should we be proud? What great mistake it would be that we would call one's own wealth one's own and then at His command refuse to give from that wealth' — from all one's defects — everything is the Master's property — the servant's hands are both empty — he gives it and also receives — whose capacity is it? When the capacity for receiving leaves the hand, who will give and the Master will find it? Sahibo! People have a great habit of the task coming at a certain time — giving, giving — something comes to nothing — we go and come back later — we are given time so that the task may be done — previously what had you intended that could be started — 'Man jarraba al-mujarrab ḥallat bihi al-nadāma' — (he who tries what has already been tried deserves the regret) — meaning: one who has already experienced something and still repeats it — his result is regret. The truly unwise person is the one who does not learn from experience.
