Deriving Rulings from Hadith (احادیث سے استنباط)

Not everyone is qualified to derive juridical rulings (istinbat) from hadith. The analogy: just as a blacksmith knows how to work with fire and metal, while an ordinary person who attempts the same will only burn himself, so too the extraction of legal rulings from hadith requires deep knowledge of the principles of hadith science, jurisprudence (fiqh), the Arabic language, and the conditions for applying various narrations. The unqualified person who attempts this independently will go astray and mislead others. This is why the great Imams of fiqh — Abu Hanifa, Malik, al-Shafi'i, and Ahmad — are indispensable guides.
