Bab Fadhl al-Hasan

The Excellence of Hasan bin Ali (RA), the Last of the Rightly Guided Caliphs

بَابٌ : فِی فَضْلِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ رَضِیَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُمَا وَإِنَّهُ آخِرُ خُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِيْنَ

عَنِ الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ : قَالَ اِسْتَقْبَلَ وَاللّٰهِ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ مُعَاوِيَةَ بِكَتَائِبَ أَمْثَالِ الْجِبَالِ فَقَالَ عَمْرُو ابْنُ الْعَاصِ لِمُعَاوِيَةَ " وَاللّٰهِ لَأَرَیٰ كَتَائِبَ لَا تُوَلِّیْ حَتَّی تَقْتُلَ أَقْرَانَهَا - فَقَالَ لَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ - وَكَانَ وَاللّٰهِ خَيْرَ الرَّجُلَيْنِ - أَيْ عَمْرُو ! أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قَتَلَ هٰؤُلَاءِ هٰؤُلَاءِ وَهٰؤُلَاءِ هٰؤُلَاءِ - مَنْ لِیْ بِأُمُوْرِ الْمُسْلِمِيْنَ مَنْ لِیْ بِنِسَاءِ هِمْ - مَنْ لِیْ بِضَيْعَتِهِمْ ؟ فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ مِنْ عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ وَعَبْدَ اللّٰهِ بْنَ عَامِرٍ - فَقَالَ إِذْهَبَا إِلَی هٰذَا الرَّجُلِ وَاعْرِضَا عَلَيْهِ وَقُوْلَا لَهُ وَاطْلُبَا إِلَيْهِ فَأَتَيَاهُ فَدَخَلَا عَلَيْهِ وَتَكَلَّمَا وَقَالَا لَهُ وَطَلَبَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُمُ الْحَسَنُ رَضِیَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُ إِنَّا بَنِی عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَدْ أَصَبْنَا مِنْ هٰذَا الْمَالِ - وَإِنَّ هٰذِهِ الْاُمَّةَ قَدْعَاثَتْ فِیْ دِمَائِهَا - قَالَا فَإِنَّهُ يَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ كَذَا وَكَذَا وَيَطْلُبُ إِلَيْكَ وَنَسْئَلُكَ - قَالَ فَمَنْ لِیْ بِهٰذَا ؟ قَالَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِهِ - فَمَا سَأَ لَهُمَا شَيْئًا إِلَّا قَالَ نَحْنُ لَكَ بِهِ - فَصَالَحَهُ - قَالَ الْحَسَنُ الْبَصْرِيُّ سَمِعْتُ اَبَابَكْرٍ رَضِیَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللّٰهِ صَلَّی اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَی الْمِنْبَرِ وَالْحَسَنُ ابْنُ عَلِيٍّ إِلَی جَانِبِهِ وَهُوَ يُقْبِلُ عَلَی النَّاسِ مَرَّةً وَعَلَيْهِ أُخْرَی وَيَقُوْلُ إِنَّ ابْنِی هٰذَا سَيِّدٌ وَلَعَلَّ اللّٰهَ تَعَالَی انْ يُصْلِحَ بِهِ بَيْنَ فِئَتَيْنِ عَظِيْمَتَيْنِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِيْنَ - (اخرجه البخاری - تیسر جلد اول)

Vocabulary: Istaqbala: faced, confronted. Kata'ib: plural of katiba, armies. Amthal: plural of mithal, like. Jibal: plural of jabal, mountains. La tuwalli: will not retreat. Aqran: companions, peers. Man li binisa'ihim: who will be the guardian of their women? Man li bidai'atihim: who will be the defender of their lands? Ba'atha: sent. Fa-atayahu: so they both came to him. Takallama: they both spoke. Qad aathat fi dima'iha: truly these people shed blood, caused corruption. Ya'ridu alayka: offers you, presents to you. Nahnu laka bihi: we guarantee it for you. Fasalahahu: so he made peace with him. Fi'atayn azimatayn: two great factions, two large groups.

Translation: Hazrat Hasan Basri (RA) narrates: By Allah! Imam Hasan bin Ali (RA) confronted Amir Muawiyah with armies like mountains. Amr bin al-As said to Amir Muawiyah: "By Allah! I see such armies that will not retreat until they kill their opposing peers." Amir Muawiyah said to him—and by Allah he was better than both (meaning Amr bin al-As and Muawiyah)—"O Amr! Tell me, if these kill those and those kill these, who will manage the affairs of the Muslims?
