So Hazrat Umar (RA) wrote to the governor of Ash-Sham to send that person to me. When that person came, Hazrat Umar (RA) asked: "Are you the person who assumes that he is a believer?" He said: "Yes, O Amirul Mu'minin!" Hazrat Umar (RA) said: "Alas for you, upon what reliance do you say this?" That person submitted: "Were not the people with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of three types? Mushrik, Munafiq, and Mu'min. So in these three types, which category am I from? (Meaning when I am not a Mushrik and Munafiq, then it must be acknowledged that I am a Mu'min). Hazrat Umar (RA) understood the meaning of his saying what he was saying. Considering his existing state, there is no harm in this. So he shook hands with him."* *(This hadith has been narrated by Abdur Razzaq in Jami', and this hadith is present in Kanz al-'Ummal).*
